What are the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa requirements in 2026?

The DNV requires €3,500/month net from outside Cyprus, €30,000 health insurance valid in Cyprus, and a clean criminal record — for non-EU nationals only.

In detail, you need:

The programme is capped at 1,000 permits (raised from 500 in March 2025). Source: Civil Registry and Migration Department (moi.gov.cy) / gov.cy DNV Scheme PDF (Dec 2025).

How long is the DNV and how do you apply?

The DNV is initially valid for 1 year and renewable for up to 3 years total.

ItemDetail
Initial validity1 year (temporary residence permit)
RenewalRenewable up to 3 years total; confirm renewal procedure with the Civil Registry and Migration Department (moi.gov.cy)
After 3 yearsRe-application or transition to another residency route required
Work rightsRemote work for non-Cyprus employers/clients only

What is the Non-Dom tax benefit — and what does it NOT cover?

Non-Dom status gives you 0% Special Defence Contribution (SDC) on worldwide dividends and interest for up to 17 years — but it does not help with rental income.

Income typeNon-Dom treatment (2026)
Dividends0% SDC for up to 17 years (until deemed domiciled)
Interest0% SDC for up to 17 years (until deemed domiciled)
Rental incomeNo Non-Dom advantage. SDC on rental income was abolished from 1 Jan 2026 for all Cyprus tax residents (domiciled and non-domiciled alike). Rental income is taxed as ordinary income (0–35% progressive + 2.65% GeSY) for everyone regardless of domicile status. Non-Dom status gives no rental income advantage.
Employment incomeOrdinary income tax (0–35% progressive). Not a Non-Dom SDC benefit. A separate 50% income-tax exemption applies if salary >€55,000/yr, first employed in Cyprus from 1 Jan 2022 onward, and conditions are met (this is a standalone statutory exemption, independent of Non-Dom status). First €22,000 tax-free (personal allowance, 2026 figure).

The “up to 17 years” period ends when you have been Cyprus tax resident for 17 of the preceding 20 years — at which point you are deemed domiciled and SDC applies at standard rates. The 2026 Cyprus tax reform left the dividend/interest Non-Dom benefit intact. SDC is not abolished overall — only the rental income SDC was abolished (for all residents). Dividends and interest remain SDC-exempt for non-domiciled residents until the 17-year threshold.

Non-Dom — important note: The 0% SDC exemption applies only to dividends and interest — not all income. Rental income is not a Non-Dom benefit. Always confirm your specific situation with a qualified Cyprus tax adviser before making financial decisions.

What is the 50% salary exemption for high earners?

Salary above €55,000/year gets a 50% income-tax exemption for up to 17 years, on top of the €22,000 tax-free personal allowance.

How do you become a Cyprus tax resident — the 60-day rule explained

The standard route is 183 days in Cyprus per year. The faster 60-day rule works if you meet four conditions simultaneously.

The 60-day rule applies if, in the tax year:

Satisfying all four conditions makes you a Cyprus tax resident for that year. Non-Dom status then applies automatically to new tax residents whose domicile of origin is outside Cyprus. Confirm the conditions and your specific situation with a Cyprus tax adviser before relying on this rule.

Is Cyprus in the Schengen area?

No — Cyprus is an EU member state but is not in the Schengen area as of 2026. Standard Schengen 90/180 short-stay rules do not apply to Cyprus.

Third-country nationals should check the specific entry and short-stay requirements for Cyprus directly with the Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mfa.gov.cy) or their nearest Cyprus consulate. For EU/EEA/Swiss citizens, free movement applies regardless of Schengen membership.

Do EU/EEA/Swiss citizens need a visa for Cyprus?

No — EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals have free movement rights and do not need the Digital Nomad Visa to live and work in Cyprus.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens register locally after arriving — obtaining a Cyprus registration certificate and a tax identification number. No fixed income threshold is imposed for the registration itself, though non-working residents may need to show sufficient resources and health cover. Confirm registration requirements with the Civil Registry and Migration Department (moi.gov.cy).
